Type-bar-making machines; keyboards; clamping matrices; proof-taking apparatus.-In a typebar-making machine having matrices on sliding bars, each of which carries a complete set of characters, the matrix-selecting mechanism is operated from a typewriter keyboard, whereby a proof of the composed matter is obtained, and an incorrect line may be re-written before the final positioning of the matrices. The key-levers A<1>, Fig. 1, of the typewriter act on members E, which are connected by levers B<2> and wires B<3> to a series of pivoted shutters B<6>, each of which extends across the width of the machine. Beneath the shutter is mounted a row of plungers C<3>, supported in a carriage C, which is traversed laterally across the machine in unison with the typewriter carriage. Beneath the plunger carriage is a stop-bed D containing as many rows of stops D' as there are characters in the line to be cast, one stop in each row being depressed by the action of the operated plunger C<3>. Each plunger may operate either of two stops, as determined by a shift-key. The stop-bed is movable vertically by means of rods D<2>. In the case of an error in the line, the stops are re-set by drawing a roller G beneath them, and the line is then re-written. The matrix-bars H<3>, having characters in their undersides, slide upon a bed H. Each bar has at one end a stop H<9> for engagement with the projected stop D<1>, and the matrix-bars are drawn along the bed by a spring finger J, which engages notches H<6>, until the bars are arrested by the stop. The matrix-bars are clamped down on a mould K, Fig. 2, by a yoke L, operated by springs L<1>. The bars are clamped together between bevelled abutments M<6>, M<9>, one of which is engaged by an arm M, adjustably mounted on the yoke L, and the other by a spring-pressed arm M<12>.
