Abstract
338,901. Lavan, T. J. Aug. 23, 1929. Foundations; rammers.-Relates to means for compacting concrete beneath the bearing plates 13 of street railway tracks, and consists in subjecting the concrete on each side of each track rail 12 to opposed mechanical pressure which is applied over a large area and directed inwardly towards and under the rail in a substantially horizontal direction by means of fluid pressure. The rails 12 are supported on the plates 13 which are connected by ties 15 so as to form a series of rectangular structures. Pressure is applied to the concrete by means of pairs of pistons 29 operating in cylinders 26 carried by a vehicle 17 having wheels 20 adapted to run on the rails 12. The cylinders 26 are mounted on plates 25 depending from a pair of channel members 23 dis-' posed at the front end of the vehicle. The pistons are operated in unison so as to cause the piston heads 30 to compress the concrete 16 by means of a control valve 31 connected with a source of compressed air and having connections 33, 34 leading to the front and rear ends respectively of the cylinders 26. The angle and movement of the heads 30 are arranged so that the latter will intercept and carry forward an amount of concrete sufficient to fill with compacted concrete the space between the plates 13 and underbed 11.
