Abstract
338,573. Pugh, J. V. June 18, 1929. Hoops; wheels.-A rim for a wire-spoked wheel is held, and if necessary trued, in a jig fitted with a series of recessed and perforated dies which co-operate with power-operated depressing and punching dies whereby the spokereceiving formations in the rim are produced simultaneously. In the apparatus shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, the wheel rim c is centred on a series of holding-seats b which are adjusted axially by means of a hydraulic plunger a<4> fitted with studs a<5> engaging slots b<3> in the inner coned faces of the seats. Fitted to the latter, in positions corresponding to the spoke locations in the rim, are dies, b<4>, b<5> recessed and perforated to cooperate with depressing dies e<3>, e<4>, e<5> and punches e<6>, e<7>, e<8>. The dies e<3>, e<4>, e<5> are carried by a piston e<1> working in a power cylinder e, the punches operating after the depressing action by means of a piston e<2> fitted within the piston, e<1>. In a modification, the punches are operated from inside the rim. The spokes are preferably arranged so that the outer ends of two or more are fitted in proximity in a single recess. Fig. 15 shows a section of the rim with a recess adapted to receive three spokes, the end apertures l<1>, l<2> being shaped to receive oppositelyinclined tangent spokes and the central aperture l a radial spoke.
