Abstract

338,439. Vereinigte Stahlwerke Akt.- Ges., (Assignees of Nierhaus, F. W.). March 15, 1929, [Convention date]. Shafts.-Cranks, crank shafts &c. are formed from metal blocks which before being worked to crank &c. form are freed from piping and segregation by removing the core 1 by boring or piercing, the block 2 being then forged to ring form 3, flattened at 5 and divided at 4, resulting in a crank wherein there is no sharp bending of, the fibres tending to weaken the metal. In a modification shown in Fig. 7, a bored ingot is expanded to tubular formation 8 with a centre collar 7, slit longitudinally by radial cuts into a number of sections and each section bent to crank form by bending down the ends as shown by the arrows. In another modification the bored ingot is expanded and worked to a flat ring, cut across and straightened to form a flat bar and bent and further worked to multiple throw crank form.
