Abstract

Nov. 19, 1929 Tobacco; tobacco pipes &c.-The poisonous constituents of tobacco smoke, such as nicotine, pyridine, and " brenzole," are separated by passing the smoke through a dry absorption medium, such as highly activated carbon or silica gel, which has been previously saturated with a volatile substance adapted to prevent the aroma-imparting constituents from being absorbed also. The preliminary treatment of the medium is effected by the smoke obtained from the combustion of nicotine-free tobacco waste, or by etheric oils such as peppermint oil, or by incorporating with the medium, during its production, sodium hydroxide, sodium carbonate, cane sugar, common salt, tannic or barbituric acid, ozone, or sodium hydrosulphite. In the case of silica gel, the preliminary treatment may consist merely in stopping the drying process when the water content is 20-25 per cent. When etheric oils are used, they are dissolved in alcohol, ether, &c., and the solvent driven off by heat or by conducting air therethrough.
