Copying - telegraphs. -Apparatus for the transmission or reception of pictures comprises a plane picturecarrier and two picture-traversing devices reciprocated across, and alternately operative upon, the picture, or carrier which is fed transversely of the paths of reciprocation. The traversing devices are arranged to move in opposite directions, and to be operative in one direction only. The picture traversing devices 20, 21 mounted on screwthreaded spindles 22, 23 are reciprocated across a plane picturecarrier 10 moved in a transverse direction on rods. 13, 13 by a knifeedge member 16 engaging a screw-threaded spindle 17 driven by gears 18 from a motorshaft 19. The spindles 22, 23 are mounted in a carriage consisting of end bearing members 24, 25 connected by rods 26, 27, 28. The carriage is supported for rocking motion on pins 29 carried by supporting pillars 30. Gear wheels 31, 32 fixed to the spindles 22, 23 are always in engagement with each other, and are-alternately driven by a gear wheel 131 of a train 131, 133 driven from the motor shaft 19. At the commencement of a line or train of signals, a synchronizing signal energizes an electromagnet 46 actuating through links 45, 44, a slider 43 which rocks the carriage so that the gear wheel 32 of the spindle 23 is brought into engagement with the gear-wheel 131 so that the device 21 is moved across the carrier with its stylus in engagement, whilst the device 20, rocked out of operation, moves idly across the carrier in the opposite direction. The device 21 at the commencement of the next picture train is rocked by a synchronizing signal so that the gear wheel 31 of the device 20 and spindle 22 engages the wheel 131. The device 20 now moves across the paper with its stylus in operation, whilst the device 21 moves idly in the opposite direction. The transmitting traversing devices may embody light-sensitive devices co-operating with a source of light, and the reproducing devices may carry neon lamps.
