Abstract

Road-contouring apparatus. - The apparatus comprises duplicate friction-driven variable-speed mechanisms for effecting the relative movements of a stylus and a record surface by which the record of the path traversed by the carriage carrying the instrument is made. Two pairs of discs C, D and E, F are driven by gearing from a road wheel &c. and these discs frictionally rotate discs A, B which are slidably mounted on shafts S, P, the positions of the driven discs being controlled by pendulums H, K so that they respectively transmit the horizontal and vertical components of the path traversed to rollers M, N carrying a record-surface, and to a stylus U. Alternatively, the record surface may be fixed and the rotations of the discs A, B may be communicated to bars capable of moving at rightangles to each other, the stylus receiving the resultant of the motions of the bars. The shafts of the driving discs may pass into hollow bosses X and be acted upon by springs so as to permit adjustment of their pressure on the driven discs. Fig. 3 shows one means for connecting the pendulums to the driven discs. The crank-pin I on the pendulum slides between bars S in a crosshead frame t mounted on guides p and carrying. the driven disc A.
