Emulsions and sensitive coatings.-To improve the stability of emulsions and correct any tendency to fog without impairing the sensitivity, compounds are incorporated which contain the grouping #R - X - NH where R is nitrogen- R - Y - free organic radical, and X and Y are the same or different electro-negative radicals containing sulphur, carbon or nitrogen, such as SO2, CO, =N, - NH. Such substances combine with the silver halide, particularly at the boundary of a growing nucleus or " sensitizing speck." Examples of different classes of substances are diacetamide. phthalimide, pyrrol derivatives such as succinimide; sulphamides and their derivatives, such as saccharin; ring compounds such as the pyrazolone ring, the pyrazole ring, the pyrazolodone ring and the osotriazole ring. The quantity added varies from 0.01 to 10 grams per 1000 grams of gelatin. The substances are preferably added in solution, using water or a suitable solvent miscible with water. Reference is made to Specifications 235,209 and 235,211 and to the Photographic Journal 1927, Vol. 67, p. 359.
