Abstract

336,426. Eickmeyer, E. E. Oct. 12, 1929. Forcefeed and gravity-feed lubricating.-Lubricant under pressure is supplied to a number of parts at different elevations through pipes leading from a manifold arranged intermediate between the highest and lowest elevations, spring-pressed check valves being provided in the pipes to prevent return of lubricant to the manifold from the parts above it and descent of lubricant from the manifold to the parts below it except upon the production of a predetermined pressure. Lubricant draining from some of the parts flows by gravity to lubricate other parts. In a gasoline filling-station pump comprising an operating-handle shaft 20 coupled to a shaft 15 geared to a shaft 9 actuating a dial shaft 31 and a rack 4 secured to the pump-piston 2, an oil pump 49 draws from a glass-walled reservoir 42 through a non-return valve 53 and delivers past a non-return valve 59 into the manifold 61. The piston 50 is normally pressed outwards by a spring 56 and may be forced inwards for delivery of oil by pressure on a knob 52. From the manifold 61 a pipe 62 leads to the gland 63 of the rod 2, pipes 64, 69 lead to the bearings 28, 35 of the shaft 31, a pipe 65 leads to the interior of a guide roller 5 for the rack 4, a pipe 67 leads to the outer bearing 16 of the shaft 15 and through a passage 68 in the shaft to the inner bearing 18, and a branch 70 from the pipe 65 leads to the outer bearing 17 of the shaft 9 and through a passage 71 in the shaft to the other bearing 12. Oil can leak from these bearings and flow along the frame members on to the gearing. That leaking through openings 38, 41 in the bearing 35 flows into a reservoir 24 in the bearing 22 for the shaft 20, a recess 25 at the end of the bearing, communicating with the reservoir, supplying the adjacent bearing 18 of the shaft 15. Oil flows from bearing 28 along a gutter 27 on an inclined member 26 of the frame on to the gearing through an aperture 29.
