Producers.-In a water gas generator having mechanical means for continuously removing ash from the fuel bed, the air-steam ratio is such as to maintain a zone in which the ash is liquefied and a cooler zone below this in which the ash tends to solidify and is removed by the mechanical device. The extent of these zones is controlled by increasing the down steaming so that, for example, the ratio of down steaming to up steaming is as 72 to 28. By this means the maximum temperature zone is lowered to close to the ash removing device. Thus by decreasing the up steaming, the air-steam ratio is increased, and the ratio of down steaming to up steaming is increased. A generator suitable for the purpose has a fixed grate 2 above which rotates a hollow water cooled beam 3, which is connected to an ash pan 7, and is preferably rotated intermittently at one revolution in about 50 minutes. A crushing ring 20 having inclined ridges 21 is cooled by external water troughs 23. The ashes are removed by plows 24 and fall into a hopper 25, any ash falling through the fixed grate being collected in a hopper 26, these hoppers having a common cleaning door 27. A pipe 28 supplies air or steam to below the grate and withdraws water gas during a down run. In the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) a carburetted water gas set is also described in which the steam valve and change over gas outlet valves are inter-connected. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
