Sweeping machines.-Means for raising the working parts of cultivators, scarifiers, roadsweeping machines, and other implements, comprises a main transverse shaft or axle 2, cranks 9 or the like on the main shaft, travelling wheels 11 carried by the cranks, pinion wheels 12 locked or lockabLe to the travelling wheels, toothed. wheels 8 mounted on the main shaft 2 and meshing with the pinion wheels 12, means for locking the toothed wheels 8, and toggle-lever and other mechanism for operating the locking mechanism so as to cause the pinions 12 to ride over the locked toothed wheels 8 and raise the main shaft 2 and frame 1 as the wheels 11 rotate, means also being provided for retaining the main shaft in the raised position, disengaging the locking means, limiting the fall of the main shaft, and indicating the extent of the downward movement. The operating-mechanism is mounted in a casing 13 and comprises a lever 15 mounted on a shaft 14 and having a depending end 16. The lever 15 carries a pivoted pawl 19 adapted to engage a tooth 21 in an arm 20 loosely mounted on the shaft 14. The arm is connected by links 22 and adjustable springs 25 to an arm 23 or a shaft 24 which carries brake shoes to engage with brake drums in the toothed wheels 8. On the main shaft 2 are fixed arms 28 having another arm 31 adjustably mounted between them, and each pro. vided with a stud 29 to engage a pivoted catchlever 35 to hold the shaft 2 and frame 1 in the raised position. Resting on a bar 37 connecting together the two catch levers 35 are pivoted levers 39 connected together by a bar 40 carrying anadjustable stop 41 to lift the pawl 19 when the levers 39 are raised by the arms 28. The brakes are disengaged by the arm 31 striking a plunger 27 and causing it to break the joint of the toggle mechanism 20, 22. The lever 15 is returned to its original position by a spring 42. To allow the frame 1 to fall, the lever 15 is operated again so as to cause studs 17 on its end 16 to raise the catch levers 35. The downward movement may be limited adjustably and the depth of work of the tines 4 thus controlled by means of a worm sector 44 loosely mounted on the shaft 2 and engaging with a worm on a spindle 46 provided with a hand-wheel 47. The worm sector 44 carries dogs or stops 48 to engage with dogs or stops 49 on the shaft 2. An indicator consists of a fixed pointer 53 and a disc secured to a crenulated wheel 51 adapted to be turned by a tooth on a sleeve 52 on the shaft 46. In another arrangement, a lever freely mounted on the shaft 2 is provided with a catch engaging a fixed toothed sector and with projections on its hub to engage against projections on a collar on the shaft 2, the depth of work being indicated by figures marked on the toothed locking-sector.
