To all whom itmag concern 1 Be it known that I, CHARLES H. HAs'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at McLoud, in the county of Pottawatomie and State of Oklahoma, have invented cer-' tain new and useful Improvements in Road- W orking Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings- This invention relates to certain improve{ ments in road workingmachines and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby the surface of a road may be leveled and in a manner whereby no resultant cloddy ridge is left in the central portion of a road.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved device of this general character which operates successfully to level or smooth a road in the central or crown portion and which also eliminates ruts and ridges or cloddy placeswhich may be in the road. I I
The inventionconsists inthe details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts ofmy improved road working machine whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to de scribe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:

As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, A denotes a front axle suitably secured to a" bolster 1 The bolster '1 is provided with a fifth wheel member 2 associated in a conventional manner with a fifth wheel member 3 carried by a transversely disposed beam or sill 1. Rotatably mounted on the opposite end portions of the axle A are the disk wheels 5, provided with the peripheral fingers or lugs 6 so that-said wheels will have effective tractive contact with the road surface. Connected with the bolster 1 in any desired manner is a draft tongue 7 whereby a team may be readily hitched to the machine, although it is to be understood that my improved machine may be drawn or transported in any desired manner which I can be employed with convenience and fa cility. p F denotes the frame of my machine as herein disclosed and said frame comprises two side members or beams 8 having their forward end portions operatively connected, as at 9, and preferably through the instrumentality of clevises withthe opposite end portions of the sill 4L and at sides inwardly of but in closeproximity to the wheels 5. Therear portions of each of the side members or beams 8 are continued by the vertically spaced diverging extensions or members 10 which are continued by the rearwardly directed extensions or members 11in parallelism with each other and substantially inparallelism with the forward portion of the beam 8. The rear or free extremities of the members or extensions 11 are tied or connected by a, vertically disposed member or beam 12. The extensions or members 11 are connected at their opposite end portions by the transversely disposed beams or members 14 and the rear end portions of the side members or beams 8 are also connected by a transversely directed beam or member 15.
Depending from the central portion of the lower extensions or members 11 are the bearings 17 in which are rotatably mounted the shafts 18 of the roller R, said roller It being of a length substantiallycoextensive I to thewidth of the frame F. I
Secured to the central portion of the upper transversely disposed members. or beams 14 and extending rearwardly of the frame F is a member or beam 19. Con
necting the outer or free end portion of the beam 19 andthe lower rear transverse beam or member 15 is a brace beam or member 20. The rear or outer end portion of the beam 19 has mounted thereon for sliding movement lengthwisethereof, a seat structure S which is adapted to be occupied by the operator. 'The operator by shifting the seat structure S along the member 19 may position his weight to assure a proper balancing of the machine. This shifting movement of the seat structure can be readily efiected when occupied, as said structure is arranged within such close proximity to the road surface to permit the operator to stand upon such surface. In practice, however, it is preferred that during a working operation the seat structure S be arranged directly above the roller R.

o the side members or beams 8 of "the frame F are the forward end portions of the beams 21, said be ms being capable of swinging movement in a vertical direction. The rear end portions of the beams 21 are connected or depressed portion 25, provided in a springlever 26. The spring lever 26 has its forward end portion suitably anchored, as at 27, to the sill i, while the opposite or rear end portion of the lever terminates in close proximity to the roller R and is provided with a pedal 28 so that said leverunay be conveniently manipulated by the occupant of the seat structure S when the same is in its normal position above the roller R. The rear portion of the spring lever 26 coacts w th a vertlcally disposed rack 29 carried by the transverse beam or member 15 so that the member or beam 22 or more particularly the fingers or teeth 23 carried thereby may be held in different vertical positions as the requirements of practice may prefer.
B denotes a substantially"U-shaped frame having its free end portions forwardly directed and engaged, as at 30, with the sill i for swinging movement in a vertical direction, the connections 30 being outwardly of the disk wheels 5. Associated with each end portion of the frame B is, a brace arm or member 31 which is also operatively en gaged, as at 32, with the sill at but at a point inwardly of the adjacent wheel The rear or intermediate portion of the frame terminates in close proximity to the transverse member or beam 15, and operatively engaged with the central part of such intermediate portion of the frame is a link 33 which is also operatively engaged with a member or bar 34; supported for sliding movement in a vertical direction. The member or bar 34 coacts with a superstructure 35, carried by the member or beam 15 and the rear upper transverse member or beam let. Rotatably supported by this superstructure 35 is a vertically disposed shaft 36 carrying a worm 37 constantly. in mesh with the face of the member or bar 3% so that upon requisite rotation of the shaft. 36 the frame B may be raised or lowered as desired.
The upper end portion of the shaft 36 is provided with a cross bar 38 having swiveledto its opposite end portion the grips 39. These grips 39 are adapted to be grasped by the operator or occupant of the seat structure ti when it is desired to rotate the shaft 86 in the desired direction. Depending from the frame B and extending from substantially one end thereof to the other, is a scraping blade i0 which, when in working position in addition to. loosening the dirt, serves to distribute the dirt to the low places, in the road surface and to fill ruts.
Suitably secured to the rear portion of the frame B at opposite sides thereof, are the upstanding loop members 41 which straddle from above the side members or beams 8 of the frame These, loop members 11 coact with the beams or members 8 to limit the downward movement of the frame B and the consequent extent of penetration of the blade 40. I
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a road working machine constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I I claim:
1. A machine of the class described comprising a frame, sup orting means for the forward portion of tie frame, a roller supporting the rear portion of the frame, a scraping element carried by the frame in advance of the roller, a member extending rearwardly of the frame, and a seat structure slidably mounted on said member.
2. A machine of the class described comprising a frame, supporting means for the. forward portion of the frame, a roller supporting the rear portion of the frame, a scraping element carried by the frame in advance of the roller, and upstanding loop members carried by the scraping element and straddling from above portions of the frame, said loop members limiting the extent of downward movement of the scraping element.

A machine of the class described comprising a transversely disposed sill, supporting means therefor, a substantially U-shaped frame having its free end portions forwardly directed, means for connecting the forward'extremities of the frame to the sill to permit said frame to have swinging movement in a vertical direction, a scraping blade" depending from the frame and extending substantially from one end of the frame to the other, means for impartingswinging movement to the frame, a second frame operatively engaged with the S111 and extending above and rearwardly of thefirst named frame, a vertically slidable member carried by the second frame adjacent the rear portion of the first named frame, a link connecting the vertically movable member and'the firstnamed frame, a worm rotatably supported by the second frame and operatively engaged with the vertically movable member to impart movement to said member to raise and lower the first named frame, and means for rotating the worm.

A machine of the class described comprising a transversely disposed sill, supporting means therefor, substantially U-shaped frame having its free end portions forwardly directed means for connectin the forward extremities of the frameto the sill to permit said frame to have swinging movement in a vertical direction, a scraping blade depending from the frame and extending substantially from one end of the frame to the other, means for imparting swinging movement to the frame, a second frame 0peratively engaged with the sill and extending above and rearwardly of the first named frame, a vertically slidable member carried by the second frame adjacent the rear portion of the first named frame, a link connecting the vertically movable member and the first named frame, means for imparting movement to the vertical member to raise and lower thefirst named frame, and means carried by the first named frame and engaging the second named frame for limiting the downward movement of the first named frame.
