COMBINED ROLLER AND HARROW.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 21, 1908.
Application iled March 25. 1907. Serial No. 364.315.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OORDY O. DoLLrsoN, citizen of the United States, residing at Lancaster, in the county of F airfield and State of Ohio/have invented certain new useful Improvements in a Combined Roller and Harrow, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a combined roller and harrow and has for its object the provision of a device constructed in such manner that it may be used to roll land or to simultaneously roll and harrow land.
As will be presently seen, the device oomprises a roller and rotative harrows located upon each side of said roller, said harrows being adapted to be lowered into engagement with the earth or lifted out of engagement with the earth and each of said harrows being controllable independently of the other of said harrows, whereby the harrow at the front end of the machine may be lowered into engagement with the earth, while the harrow at the rear end of themachine is held out of engagement with the earth. The land will then be first harrowed and then rolled as the machine passes over it. lf upon the other hand, the harrow at the front end of the machine is held out of engagement with the earth and the harrow at the rear end of the machine is lowered into engagement with the earth, the land will be first rolled and then harrowed as the i machine passes over it andif both of the harrows are lowered into engagement with the earth, the land will be first harrowed and then rolled and then reharrowed during a single passage of the machine.
One embodiment of my invention has been illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan 'view with the upper platform of the machine broken away, Fig. 2 is a section upon line Qc-Qc of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the machine, Fig. 4 is a partial longitudinal vertical section of the roller, and, Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view illustrating the mounting of the platform of the machine with relation to the rectangular frame, in which the roller is journaled.
Like numerals designate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawing.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 5 designates a rectangular frame which carries straps 6, these straps being adapted to receive the reduced. lower ends 7 (see Fig. 5) of the corner posts 8 of a platform 9. A drivers seat 1() is mounted upon this platform and the driver is shielded from the weather by a canopy 11, which is supported upon corner posts 12.
Journaled in bearings 13 of the rectangular frame 5, is a shaft 14. Mounted upon this shaft are the sections 15 and 16 forming the main roller. These sections are provided at each end with spurs 17, said spurs providing an effective grip for the roller to impart rotation to the sections 15 and 16, as the machine is drawn over the ground, a pole 18 being connected to the machine at the front side thereof, (see Fig. 1) to permit of horses being hitched to the structure. Formed upon each of the sections of the roller is a sprocket wheel 19. Sprocketo chains 2O pass over these sprocket wheels, said sprocket chains being in turn geared to smaller sprocket wheels 21 which are mounted upon the shafts 22 of the harrows.- These shafts carry at each end, disks 23 and these disks are connected by strips 24 which receive the harrow teeth 25, said harrow teeth passing through the strips and having nuts 26 threaded upon the shanks 27 thereof, the inner ends of said shanks bearing against the shafts 22. The shafts 22 are journaled in arms 28 which are pivoted upon the shaft 14. Links 29 and arms 30 connect the arms 28 with shafts 31. Levers 32 are adapted to rock these shafts to raise or lower the harrows bodily through the connections described. A lever 33 is pivoted at 34 upon the platform 9 of the machine. Arms 35 are pivoted to each end of the lever 33 and play through keepers 36. The levers 32 pass through slots 37 formed in the platform 9 and the arms 35 are adapted to be moved across the path of movement of these levers to lock them at either of their limits of movement to thereby hold the harrows in either an elevated or a lowered position. This is accomplished by the operator placing his foot between lugs 39 of one of the arms 35 to rock the arm 33 upon its pivot 34.
As is best illustratedy in Fig. 1, the strips 24 are obliquely arranged. lf these strips extended straight across the machine, all of the teeth 25 carried by a single strip would strike the ground at once and the harrowing would be a step by step operation that would be hard upon the machine and upon the horses drawing it. By obliquely arranging these strips, the teeth carried by each of said strips, come into contact with the ground one after the other, or in succession and do not all strike the ground at the same time.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that simple and efficient means are herein provided for accomplishing the objects of the invention, but while the elements shown and described are well adapted to serve the purpose for which they are intended, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the precise construction set forth, but includes within its purview such changes as may be made within the scope of the ap pended claims.
What I claim is:
In a combined roller and harrow the combination with a supporting frame of a land roller mounted in said frame, a pair of harrows mounted in said frame, controlling levers connected to said harrows, a removable platform mounted upon the supporting frame and slotted to permit the passage of the controlling levers therethrough, a seat mounted upon said removable platform, a centrally pivoted foot lever which lies parallel with the seat, locking arms 35 pivoted to each end of this lever and keepers through which said locking arms move, said locking arms being adapted to be moved across the slots to lock the operating levers against movement.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
