Abstract

June 26, 1929, Separating gases by liquefaction. - Purified coke oven gas passes through parallel heat exchangers A1, A2, A3 in which it is cooled, the condensate, ethylene contaminated with methane, being collected in a separator D, while the uncondensed gas is further cooled in exchangers Bl, B2, C1, C2, depositing methane with carbon monoxide in a separator E and nitrogen and carbon monoxide with a little methane in a separator F. The liquid from the vessel F is passed to the exchanger B2, in which it is partly vaporized, the gas formed together with any gas accompanying the liquid from the vessel F, raising the remaining liquid to a zone in which it is completely vaporized. At this zone liquid from the vessel E is introduced, which is completely vaporized and warmed up in the exchangers B2, A2. Liquid frcm the vessel D is vaporized in the exchanger A3. The exchanger C2 is cooled by liquid nitrogen introduced at the point 12 and raised by hydrogen introduced through the valve 11. The uncondensed gas from the separator F passes through the exchangers C1, B1, A1. In a modification, condensate from the vessel F is introduced into the upper part of the exchanger C2 through the valve 24, and flows down in counter current to hydrogen introduced at the point 11 any excess of liquid being removed by a siphon 23 Auxiliary gas may be delivered through the valve 25.
