223,489. Soc. l'Air Liquide, Soc. Anon. pour l'Etude et l'Exploitation des ProcÚdÚs G. Claude. Nov. 20, 1923, [Convention date]. Separating gaseous mixtures by liquefaction.- Ethylene is removed from illuminating or like gas which is to be partially liquefied and rectified, by circulating the gas upwardly in a temperature exchanger through the zone in which ethylene liquefies and up to the zone where considerable liquefaction of methane takes place, the ethylene being progressively liquefied, and the methane in the liquid so formed being vaporized by allowing it to flow back to a collector from which the liquid containing ethylene together with ethane, acetylene, &c is extracted. The apparatus shown comprises three heat exchangers A, B, C through which the separated hydrogen passes reversely through pipes 1, 5, 9, escaping by the outlet 15, and carbon monoxide and methane similarly pass through pipes 2, 6, 10 to the outlet 16. The gas to be purified passes through pipes 11 - - 14 to the separator. Readily liquefied impurities may be drawn off from the exchanger A by taps, as described in Specification 195,598. Ethane is liquefied in the exchanger B and flows d.own to a collector K from which it is withdrawn. Several collectors K may be provided at different heights, the most suitable being employed. The carbon monoxide and methane which are not so cold as the hydrogen may be introduced directly through the pipe 5.
