Abstract

334,295. Oldroyd, F. H. June 7, 1929. Yarns and threads.-Two ends of yarn, thread, string, cord, &c. to be spliced together are mounted to overlap in a holder and are acted on by one or more barbed needles which reciprocate rhrough and out of the yarn &c. to force the fibres to interlock. A plate 1 hinged at 3 is raised for insertion of the ends 12, 13 to be spliced and is held down by a spring 6, Fig. 1. The needles 7 pass through guide blocks 8 and may be held by a set-screw in a socket 9 mounted on a rapidly reciprocating crosshead 10. The needles may also be oscillated, between limits as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 5, in which case the plate 1 has a row of small holes 15 instead of a single such hole as in splicers where the needle only reciprocates. Engagement of the oscillating needles with the holes 15 is ensured by a cam, and a geneva-wheel or like mechanism. An aperture 16 is provided to allow observation of the yarn &c. during splicing. The needles, which are of triangular section, may rotate whilst reciprocating and the teeth may be arranged helically. Threads of yarn &c. are drawn through the holder 1 during splicing by needles which reciprocate only, and may be reinserted in reversed positions and again acted on by the needles, or there may be a second needle or set of needles having teeth which face in the reverse direction from that of the first, or the needle or set of needles may have teeth facing in opposite directions, thus acting on the yarn &c. during both strokes of each reciprocation, or the yarn holding part of the apparatus may rotate to vary continuously the part of the yarn engaging the needles. The device may be mounted on a winding-frame or may be portable and attached to the operator. After splicing, the joined yarn may be trimmed with scissors and is preferably twisted by hand.
