Abstract
333,748. Cincinnati Bickford Tool Co., and Williamson, L. R. Aug. 23, 1929. Drilling - machines. - A metal-cutting machine having a movable drill-arm carrying a driving motor and operating-mechanism for the drill driven therefrom has a fluid pump actuated by the operating-mechanism so as to supply fluid to clamping means for the drill-arm and also to the operating or other mechanism for the lubrication thereof. As applied to a radial arm drilling-machine the arm 13 is vertically slidable on a sleeve 12 which is rotatable on a pillar extending upwards from the base 10. An electric motor 16 on the arm drives, through a shaft 17 and gearing 19, a shaft 20 journaled on the arm, the shaft 20 being splined to the driving gearing for the drill spindle located in the head 14 and having secured to one end thereof a pinion 21. Gearing 23 in mesh with the pinion 21 drives a crank shaft 24 carrying eccentrics for operating a two-cylinder oil pump 36 whose inlet valves lie beneath the level of oil in a casing 26 enclosing the pump and gearing. Oil is delivered from the pump by a pipe 37 to a distributing valves 55 whose plug 63, Fig. 5, is rotatable through bevel gearing 77, Fig. 4, and a shaft 59, Fig. 1, on the arm from a hand lever 58 which is splined to the shaft 59 and is carried along with the drill head 14 by means of a lug 62 thereon engaging an annular recess 61 on the lever. The supply pipe 37, Fig. 5, leads oil through an annular recess in the valve plug 63 to an axial bore 68 from which it proceeds through a. radial passage 69 to either of the pipes 72, 73 which are connected to the opposite ends of a fluid pressure cylinder 38, Fig. 4. The plunger 44 of the cylinder carries a sleeve 46 formed with rack teeth 47 engaging a toothed lever 49 splined on a vertical shaft 50 journaled on the sleeve 12 and provided at 52, Fig. 1, with an eccentric for operating a clamping bolt for the split end 51 of the sleeve to clamp it to the interior pillar. The packing 45 for the plunger 44 is provided with channels 45a to lead the oil directly to the flexible part of the packing to ensure tightness. A pipe 83 leads to the top of the casing 26 and is supplied from the exhaust pipe 74 of the cylinder 38 (leading from an annular recess 65 in the valve plug), or from a bye-pass relief valve 79 on the supply pipe 37 to the cylinder. The valve plug 63 may be set to close both pipes 72 and 73, in which case the clamp 52 is maintained in either its clamped or unclamped condition and all the supply from the pump is delivered through the relief valve 79 to the pipe 83 and thence is sprayed over the gearing or is led to any other part of the machine requiring lubrication. Alternatively the pressure supply may be left in communication with either end of the cylinder, or with both ends. When the cylinder is in use, it absorbs substantially the whole output from the pump but this subsequently passes to the lubricating pipe 83 by means of the exhaust 74 from the cylinder.
