Abstract

332,991. Callender's Cable & Construction Co., Ltd., Richardson, A. B. F. G., and Spencer, J. A. May 28, 1929. Feeding webs.-In an arrangement for frictionally controlling the tension of flexible material, such as a strip of paper or a length of fabric, which is being drawn from a coil or roll, the friction is produced by a spring, the tension of which is varied by the movement of a nut along a screwthread, the nut boing rotated by gearing from the coil-holder, so that the frictional restraint is reduced as the radius of the coil diminishes. In the form shown in Fig. 1, two coils 9, supported on a spindle 1, are pressed against a friction disc 5 mounted on the spindle. Each coil is mounted on a rotatable hub 10, which can slide on the spindle 1 and carries a disc 11, the coil being gripped between the disc 11 and a disc 14, which is loosely mounted on the spindle and bears against the friction disc 5. A spring 15 is interposed between the hub 10 and a rotatable member 17, which is connected to the hub by a clawcoupling. The member 17 frictionally engages a non-rotatable member 20, which can slide on the spindle and abuts against a nut 21, which engages a screw-thread on the spindle. The nut 21 is slowly rotated, as the size of the coil diminishes, by a worm-wheel 29 driven by a worm 28, which is connected by gearing with a worm 26 on the periphery of the member 17. In a modification, the two coil-holders bear against ball thrust-bearings located between them on the spindle, and a travelling nut 21 is provided in connection with one coil only, but serves to control the braking force on the other coil. The movement of the nut is transmitted to a sliding collar, which forms an abutment for the spring of the other coil-holder, by means of screw-andnut mechanism and a rod passing through the spindle. In another form, the hub of the coilholder carries an eccentric, which operates ratchet-mechanism by which the nut 21 is rotated.
