Abstract

332,673. Culman, C. May 16, 1929. Spindles and the like, treating; guides and rests.-Apparatus for polishing pivots for use in watches is constructed so that both step and journal pivots may be treated. The part of the apparatus shown in Fig. 2 is used for step pivots. A spindle 32, adjustable longitudinally, holds the pivot at 33, so that it passes through a hole of appropriate size in a guide plate 26. A bushing 6 mounted in the arms 4 and 5, carries a screwed nut 30 which moves the pins 24 and 29 to allow adjustment of the guide plate. A stem 8 having a bore 10 passes through the bushing 6, inside which a sleeve 11 is frictionally held by the lateral spring 112. A small ring of metal 13 carrying the centrally perforated jewel 14 is loosely retained by the ring 17. A plug 19 in the centre of the sleeve 11 is held resiliently upwards by the spring 21. The pivot to be polished rests on the jewel 14 which has been thrown off centre by a bell crank lever fitted to the arm 4. Polishing is performed by rotating the stem 8, any burr formed being removed by bringing the jewel to its central position, lowering the pivot into the perforation and rotating. The jewel is made to rise and fall by a series of teeth on the top of the sleeve 11 engaging corresponding teeth on the ring 17. The other part of the apparatus for polishing journal pivots has a shaft 44 passing through the arms 42 and 43, having a reduced portion surrounded by a sleeve 45 carrying a gear 46 meshing with a gear 54 on an adjacent shaft 53. The sleeve 45 bears a transverse axle 48 on which are mounted the discs 49, which are forced together by the spring 47 and the vee groove 50. The pinion 46 can be raised by the cam 60, 62 thus separating the discs and allowing the pivot to be inserted. On rotating the shaft 53 the gear 46 is rotated, which first turns the cam into the inoperative position allowing the discs to close upon and polish the pivot. The discs rotate in opposite directions and are prevented from rocking by the resiliently held taper pin 51 which adapts its position to the diameter of the pivot.
