Metallurgical furnaces; charges, agitating.-A process for heating a pulverulent or granular substance comprises stirring the material in a heating chamber which is kept full of material and introducing air or gas at a low pressure through the bottom of the chamber to facilitate stirring. The process may be used for drying materials or for promoting chemical reactions, for example, the reduction of iron ore, a neutral gas being used for the purpose of mixing. A suitable apparatuscomprises a chamber having a hollow, vertical shaft 4, carrying hollow stirring arms 5. A heating medium circulates through the stirrer, 5 and through fixed coils 9 located between the folds of the stirrers. Air is supplied through a pipe 3 and a perforated plate at the bottom of the chamber.
