Abstract

332,022. Stevens, A. H., (Delco Products Corporation). June 13, 1929. Fluid-friction vibration-dampers. - In apparatus of the type in which two pistons working in opposed cylinders contained in a single casing are forced by springs into engagement with an intermediate operating-lever, one-way valves are provided in the pistons to allow free inward movement while the compression chambers formed by the outer ends of the cylinders are each connected to a separate duct, oppositely acting pressure-release devices being interposed between the ducts. The two pistons 36. 37 work in opposed cylinders 30, 31 and are forced towards one another by springs 47, 58 into engagement with opposite sides of the operating-lever 46 which is mounted on an operating-shaft connected to the axle of the vehicle. The casing 24, the central part of which forms a liquid reservoir, is bolted to the vehicle frame. Each piston carries a spindle 40 which forms a guide for a one-way valve 39 allowing practically free passage of liquid from the central reservoir 27 to the cylinder when the piston is moving inwards. The compression chambers at the outer ends of each of the cylinders 30, 31 are connected respectively by holes 63, 64 to parallel ducts 60, 61 which communicate with one another through oppositely-acting pressure-release valves 71. The valves 71 may be pressed on to their seats by springs of different strength so that the movements of the lever 46 in opposite directions may be resisted by different forces.
