Abstract
331,781. Burgess Battery Co., (Assignees of Zook, J. S.). Oct. 16, 1928, [Convention date]. Battery lamps. - A dry cell hand lamp comprises in combination a battery with a cup at one end, a lamp pivotally mounted within the cup so that it may be moved from the operating to a non-operating position and means, also mounted within the cup, for maintaining electrical connection between the base of the bulb and one pole of the battery when the bulb is in the operating position. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the two cells 1, 2 are electrically connected at 3 and are retained in an oval carton by a metal cup 5 which is soldered to one battery pole 6 and thus conveys current to the socket of the lamp through the metal closure member 11 of the carton which is in metallic connection with the top of the cup 5 and which carries the bulb either in a screw socket or by direct soldering. The member 11, which also acts as a reflector, is shown in full and dotted lines in the operating and non-operating positions respectively. It is provided with cam ends 12 and is pivoted on the extremities of a wire loop spring 15 which is secured to the cup 5 by wings 16 and a ridge 17 pressed up in the cup, the arrangement being such that the member 11 may be raised by the finger at 24 and is held in the open or closed position by the spring. The cup has an opening 7 over the battery pole 8 defined by upstanding flanges 18<1> which guide the cams 12 and downwardly bent ledges 18 which support a piece of insulating material 19, shown separately in Fig. 3 provided with a metal eyelet 21. After the piece 19 has been placed in position, a drop of solder 22 is placed in the eyelet hole so as to form a contact with the pole 8 and give a rubbing surface at the correct level for the central contact 26 of the lamp. In the alternative form shown in Fig. 6, two cells are mounted coaxially in a cylindrical case 31 to which one pole is soldered at 33. The upper end of the case contains a metal cup 32 closed by a pivoted, spring- mounted lamp-carrying member similar to the one shown in Fig. 1. This cup is perforated at 36 and carries an insulating piece 36 with an eyelet for a soldered connection to the battery pole 39, as described in connection with Fig. 3. Specification 298,531 is referred to.
