. for snugly fitting into the pocket of an ordinary garment with means acting as a combined cover for the lighting member and switch for controlling` the current to the lighting member. l
A still further object, more specifically, is. to provide a pocket lighter wherein a removable lighting element is provided and means for connecting the same electrically with a source of current for heating the lighting element when in use.
In the accompanying drawing- Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view through a lighter disclosing an embodiment of the invention.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the structure shown in Figure 1.
Referring to the accompanying drawing by numerals, 1 indicates a casing of metal or other desired material in which a dry cell 2is positioned. A bottom 3 is provided for casing 1, said bottom being hinged to the casing at 4 with the free or swinging end normally held in a closed position by a spring catch 5 'snapping over a slight projection 6 extending from the lower part of casing 1. The bottom 3 is swung to an open position Whenever it is desired to remove or apply a battery. As indicated articularly in Figure 1, battery 2 is provlded with a resilient terminal 7 and a stationary terminal 8. At the end opposite bottom 3, a cone-shaped section 9 is either formed integral with the top or end member 10 or is rigidly secured thereto. The member 9 is provided with a section of threads 11 co` acting with the threaded section 12 of a removable cone 13. The cone 13 is preferably made from metal and carries a bottom plate 14 secured thereto by solder or otherwise, said bottom plate supporting a tube 15 of porcelain or other insulating matter, a filling 16 of insulating material and a metallic refiectcr 17. This reflector is not primarily intended to reflect li ht but to act as a pocket for restricting t e heat to substantially a `given point. The reflector 17 is soldered or otherwise secured to the cone 1 3 and is provided with a projection 18 over which the spring hook or` extension 19 is adapted to snap when the cover 20-is closed. This cover is pivotally mounted at 21 on the casing 1 and has rigidly secured thereto a resilient arm 22, said arm'having preferably a loop 23 so Yas to increase the resiliency. The arm 22 is adapted to press tightly against the Y stationary contact 8 when the cover 20 is open so that this arm and the cover form a combined cover and switch for opening and closing the circuit.l

One end of the heating en' I element 24 is connected at 29 by solder or in y any other desired manner to the reflector 17 so that whenever arm 22 is engaging contact 8, the circuit will be closed and current will flow through the heating element 24 which is of such a resistance as to permit the battery 2 to cause the member 24 to become al-v most incandescent when the battery 2 is working properly.
When the heating element 24 is red hot or almost incandescent, a cigar, cigarette or the like may be readily lighted therefrom and after this has been done, lid 20 may be closed which will protect the heating element as well as protect the clothes of the person carrying the device. In addition, the closing and locking closed ofthe lid 20 will move the arm 22 for breaking the circuit of the heating element and will hold said arm out of engagement with the contact 2. A pocket electric lighter comprising a heating element, a cone-shaped structure carrying said heating element and enclosing the same on all sides except one, a casing formed with a cone-shaped depression, said cone-shaped structure being removably mounted in said cone-shaped depression, a dry cell arranged in said casing, said dry cell being formed with a pair of contacts,
one of said contacts being in; permanent electrical connection wlth said heating ele- "ment, and switch means for connecting the other terminal of the source of current to said heating element and a cover for said cone-shaped structure, said cover being formed with an arm of said switch, said arm being movable to close said switch when the cover is moved to an open position and moved to open said switch when the cover is moved to a closed position.

A pocket electric lighter comprising a casing having a depressed portion at one end` a removable cone structure mounted in said depression, a dry cell arranged in said casing, means for connecting one terminal of said dry cell to said cone structure, a heating element carried by said cone structure having one end engagingl the cone structure and the opposite end insulated therefrom, said opposite end being positioned to engage' the second terminal on said f dry cell, and manually actuated-ineans for ment arranged in said reflectorand con-- tacting therewith at one point,means extending from said heating elementto fa point exteriorly of said cone-shaped structure. a source of current arranged in said casing positioned with one contact in engagement with'said means, a resilient switch arm pivotally mounted on said casing and adapted when in one position to engage the second contact of said source of current, said ,switch arm being electricallyconnected 'with ysaid reflector, and a manually actuated member for actuating said switch, said manually actuated member being formedl of'sheet material and acting as a lid to cover said reilector.
5. A pocket electric lighter comprising a dry cell having a pair'of termin-als, a casing for said dry cell formed with .an opening, a socket member fitted into said opening, a heating element carried by said socket member, means extending from said heating element to a point eXteriorly ot the socket member and to a position in engagement with one of said terminals and a combined lid and switch for said socket member, saidcombined lid and lswitch having a resilient arm adapted to engage one of said contacts when the lid is fully opened, whereby the circuit of said element is closed.
