Fixed sieves; reciprocating or oscillating sieves.-A hopper of the kind comprising a lower neck or discharge passage with a slide plate or other closure, and a perforate plate or sieve disposed in the passage above the closure, has, combined with the sieve, a reciprocable, agitating frame comprising spaced rods arranged, above the sieve, transversely to the direction of movement of the frame, and means to reciprocate the frame from the exterior of the hopper. The sieve c of fine wire gauze or mesh has a sheet metal border and two of the opposed edges are soldered or otherwise secured to the hopper. The frame consists of spaced wire rods d arranged, above and below the sieve, transversely to the direction of motion of the frame; the rods being connected at their outer ends by sheet metal channel-shaped side pieces d<1> which slide on opposite borders of the sieve. The frame is reciprocated by a handle f and a return spring g, but the handle can be retained in its innermost position: by pressing it inwards and rotating the knob until tongues h on the knob engage in channels j' in a bent sheet metal plate fixed to the hopper. A sliding plate b fitted with a finger grip b<1> closes the end of the hopper. According to the Provisional Specification, the sieve may be reciprocable and the frame loosely mounted on it.
