Borehole apparatus. - The of a well-drilling plant comprise a countershaft driven by a prime mover and adapted to drive a line shaft and a stub-shaft placed close to the derrick floor, the, hoisting drum being driven from the line shaft and the rotary table from the stubshaft. As shown, the uprights of the draw-works support a countershaft 56, a line shaft 44, a drum shaft 39 and a shaft 75 on which is a hollow stub shaft 77 from which the rotary table 13 is driven through a chain 22. The countershaft 56 is driven from a prime mover through a sprocket 58 and drives the line shaft at either of two speeds through a common clutch 62 and chains 67, 68; the countershaft also drives the stub shaft 77 at either of two speeds through a common clutch 72 and chains 78a, 79<a>. The line shaft drives the drum shaft at variable speed through either of two chains 49 and clutches 48. The line shaft also carries a loose cat-head 83 adapted to be driven through a cone friction clutch 80 and adapted to control tongs for breaking &c. joints in drill &c. pipes. In a modification, the cat-head 80 is omitted, the line shaft then carrying a clutch-controlled sprocket adapted, through a chain, to drive joint-breaking means as in Specification 330,532.
