330,503. Forth Engine & Motor Works (Newcastle-on-Tyne), Ltd., and Paynter, W. L. Feb. 7, 1929. Tar-macadam, plant for making. - A tarmacadam plant, of the kind comprising means for providing a continuous supply of clean dry heated stones and for spraying them while in the mixer with hot liquid bitumen or the like, has an air-heating coil or coils in the bitumen-heating furnace, whereby the compressed air is heated before being supplied to the sprayers. An aircompressor 65 delivers compressed air to a reservoir 64 and thence to coils 62, 63 and 67 which are arranged above the main furnace 61 and an auxiliary furnace 68 as shown. The heated compressed air is delivered to the nozzles of a tarspraying box 102 in the mixer 37. The tar passes from a tank 42 above the furnace 61 to the tarspraying box 102 through a reservoir 45, a valve 49, a batch-measuring vessel 50, and a valve 52. The batch-measuring vessel is heated by the furnace 68. The tar is sprayed, in atomized form, on to clean dry heated stones in the mixer 37. These stones are supplied to a hopper 19 and are delivered to the perforated tube 21 of a rotary drier by the buckets 18 of an elevating device 17. The tube 21 is bolted to a revolving outer tube 24 and heated gases from a furnace pass between the two tubes. Baffle plates are provided in the tube 21 to retard the motion of the stones which eventually are delivered to a hopper 36 above the mixer 37. The mixer is heated by a low-pressure supply of air, which passes through a pipe 115 in the furnace 61 to a jacket 116 of the mixer. The, heated air may also be led to the jackets of the tar conduits. The whole plant may be portable and the mixer, air compressor, rotary drier and the elevating device may be driven, by gearing or the like, by the main driving shaft of the steam lorry upon which the plant is mounted.
