Abstract

330,025. Hunter, T. G., and Imperial Chemical Industries, Ltd. March 16, 1929. Hydrogenation, destructive; hydrocarbons, cracking.-In a process for the destructive hydro. genation or cracking of oils or suspensions of coal in oils with or without a catalyst, the material is caused to pass,by means of the injector action of a gas, through heated vertical tubes and is projected against a baffle which causes it to fall back in the form of a parabolic curtain, through which the gases and vapours must pass. The pressures employed range from one to 300 atmospheres or more, hydrogen at high pressure, being used for destructive hydrogenation, and carbon dioxide or nitrogen for the injector action during cracking. In the apparatus shown, fresh material is furnished by the supply pipe 14 of a pump 7 and is forced up tubes 2 by hydrogen or other gas under pressure, entering by a pipe 8, which by injector action carries the material to be treated up the tubes 2. Situated above the tubes 2 is a baffle plate having a concave base 4<a> and a central conical portion 4 which causes the material impinging thereon to fall as a parabolic curtain and be returned to the pipe 14 by a pipe 6. Hydrogen may enter the upper part 3 of the apparatus by a pipe 8<a>. Heated gases are sup-, plied to the chamber by a pipe 9 at a pressure approximately the same as that of the hydrogen or other gas. Vapours and gases-pass off by a pipe 11 to a catchpot 12, any separated liquid being returned by a pipe 13 to the supply pipe 14. A valved purge 15 for solid matter is provided at the lower part of the chamber 3. The temperatures employed vary from 400‹ to 500‹ C., and the tubes and other pressure resisting parts may be constructed of mild steel having an iron sheath or of an alloy steel such as a nickel, chromium, molybdenum steel. The catalyst may consists of ferric oxide in a fine state of division or the tubes 2 may be coated with a metallic catalyst.
