Abstract

329,955. Killen, E. B. Nov. 27, 1928. Jackets and covers; tyre attachments to rims; tread surfaces.-A wide-section pneumatic tyre capable of use without a separate air-tube, comprises an outer cover 1, of smaller centre-line height than width, with a cord foundation which is of round cross-section and at least semicircular outside the widest part of the cover; a leakproof rubber compound liner 15, with or without a further self-sealing liner, extending completely over the inner surface; and inextensible basebeads 5, 5A, which are provided with means, such as endless rubber corrugations Z, for airtight fitment to a metal rim. For this purpose, the beads may also be coated with paint or other sealing-liquid. The tread comprises three grooved portions of graded widths separated by steps 8, 12. The outer tread portion includes blocks 9<A>, 10<A> formed by grooves 11, the bottoms of which are undulated so as to leave cavities 11<A> in the second tread portion when the outer tread is worn away. Protecting-ribs 6<A>, 6<B> are provided adjacent the tyre beads. In all cases, the width of the cover 1 is from 12 per cent to 66 per cent greater than its centre-line height, Fig. 3 showing a form typical of several variously dimensioned tyres described in the Specification as being from 12 per cent to 90 per cent wider than the ordinary round-section pneumatic tyres. The rim 2 is preferably of the kind described in Specification 326,784, having a wide and deep wellbase merging into the bead-seatings through curved portions of large radius.
