Abstract

326,760. Killen, E. B. Sept. 14, 1928. Jackets and covers.-A tyre cover of wide section in relation to centreline height formed from unwoven cord plies comprises (1) a round-section casing not less than a semicircle in cross-section from the tread apex to the base-heads, (2) wideapart base-heads, (3) short side-wall portions 2 between the widest part of the cover and the beads, and (4) a curved tread of less overall width than that of the casing. Fig. 2 shows in full lines one form of the invention as compared with an ordinary round-section tyre (shown in dotted lines) of corresponding tread diameter, in which the base beads 4 are of smaller diameter and lesswidely spaced than the beads 3. Fig. 4 shows a modification in which the tread and bead diameters correspond with those of the ordinary round-section tyre. It is stated that less cord material is necessary than in the replaced round-section tyre, particularly with the form shown in Fig. 2. As shown in Fig. 7, the tyre is preferably fitted to a rim having a wide and deep well 6 such as that described in Specification 326,784. The widest part of the cover is formed with projecting ribs 8, 8<A>. Tread surfaces.-The tread comprises three stepped wearing surfaces 15, 16, 17, the outer or primary tread being formed with sinuous grooves 22, the bottoms of which are undulated so as to extend at intervals into the second tread portion 16 to preserve a non-skid surface when the outer tread is worn away. Specifications 117,385, 234,473, and 235,971 also are referred to. The second Provisional Specification also refers to Specification 209,123.
