Abstract

329,815. Heiland, A. May 7, 1929, Delivery of articles stored in piles. - Flat articles, such as newspapers or magazines, are arranged in a pile and placed in the open loops of a flexible cord k, Figs. 1 and 2, passing in zig-zag fashion through the pile, one end of the cord being attached to the supporting table of the pile and the other end to a drum b formed with a helical groove and slidably splined on its spindle w. After prepayment, the drum, which is connected to a shaft n through gearing l, is rotated to wind up the cord k by a weight i, connected to the shaft n by a cord o, so that the articles are pulled off the top of the pile and fall off alternately at the back and front of the pile, they being then guided to a delivery tray by a curved guide-way a. The drum b, as the cord k is wound thereon, is moved along the spindle w by a fork g engaging the helix. In a modification, Fig. 7, the drum is moved by a screwed extension v passing through a nut u which is carried by pivoted arms s. When articles of a different size are to be delivered, the drum is replaced by another of different size, or by providing a helically grooved, two-part shell which is attached to the drum by screws; or, as shown in Fig. 11, the grooved portion of the drum may consist of two shells m<1>, m<2> pivoted at q<1>, q<2> to arms p', p<2> extending from end discs p, these shells being rocked on their pivots by a turn-buckle r to adjust the diameter of the drum. Phonographs; telephone apparatus; exhibiting moving advertisements &c.-The machine may be combined with a talking machine, which calls out at intervals the names of the papers on sale, and it may also be combined with a radio set delivering messages sent from a distance. The side of the casing may display notices &c. attached to an endless band on rollers, one of which has a crank handle so that the band can be made to travel past a window. Coin action, weight and multiple coin; coindischarging mechanism. - A spring-controlled catch h, the arm of which projects into the coin shoot, is tripped by the passage of a coin to release a shouldered cam f and allow rotation of the shaft n. The tripping coin may be a single coin or the last. of a series of coins. When a series of coins is used, the first coins enter a shoot and rest on a pin d which is vertically adjustable to set the machine for use with different numbers of coins. All the coins but one rest on the pin d so that the last coin is deflected into a second shoot to trip the catch h. Separate coin shoots and separate testers are provided for the different coins. The rotation of the shaft w causes a cam e to rock a lever and withdraw the pin d, allowing the coins resting thereon to drop to a money-box. Specification 16326/11 is referred to.
