Abstract
329,209. Griffith, A. A., and Lockspeiser, B. June 25, 1929. Bourdon pressure gauges. - The gauges are constructed by blowing a bulb on the end of a tube of silica or other vitreous material of small thermal expansion, treating the bulb so as to form an annular chamber, interrupting the annulus, and closing the ends at the interruption. A bulb is first blown and then is heated by a blow-pipe at one end of a diameter at right angles to the tube. At the same time air is sucked from within the bulb until the wall has fallen in to a certain extent, when the wall at the other end of the said diameter is similarly treated until the walls fuse at the centre a. A small flame is then applied to pierce the centre. The surface tension of the silica draws it away from the centre and spreads it to form an annular tube of substantially uniform thickness. A lower temperature blowpipe flame is now applied to a point near the stem until the walls touch and separate the two closed ends, these being rounded as in Fig. 5. A pointer or mirror may be attached at the free end x for magnifying its movement. The gauge is adapted for small pressures, resists chemical action, withstands high temperatures and has no hysteresis effect.
