Carding-engines; feeding carding- engines; lapforming apparatus. - In the production of felt shoes or overshoes which are made by winding loose fibrous material on a conical former in a carding machine, felting the conical blank so formed, sewing up the large end and blocking to the desired shape, the fibrous material, which may consist of a mixture. of wool, wool combings and goat's hair, after the usual preparatory treatment is passed through an ordinary card having a breast roller, the pieces of the fleecy web so produced being arranged substantially as shown in Fig. 4 on the feed apron of a finisher card. The forming apparatus comprises a rotating guide beam B, bulged at its centre, over which the web passes to a rotating double-conical former A. A pressing roller W has a contour complementary to that of the former A and is guided by inclines E engaging the ends of its axis. The central part of the roller W is faced with loosely mounted rings, which rotate independently of each other at different speeds. A row of the members A, B, W may be arranged side by side to utilize the full width of the machine. The felt body so formed is cut along the groove r of the former and felted as usual. The arrangement shown in Fig. 4 produces a shoe decreasing in thickness from the sole to the leg portion.
