Abstract
328,597. Jourdain, M. F. R., and SOC. Freins Jourdain Monneret. Jan. 28, 1929. Sand, distributing on wheel tracks.-A sanding device for locomotives &c. comprises a mechanical propelling device such as a screw conveyer &c. which is driven by a fluid-pressure motor, the exhaust gases from the motor being led into the sand exit conduit to facilitate the discharge of the sand. The motor M, Fig. 1, is supplied with compressed air through a pipe A and drives a screw conveyer 4 which expels the sand from a container 1 into the discharge pipe 2 into which are led the exhaust-gases from the motor through a pipe E. A single-acting motor, Fig. 6, may be employed to drive a ratchet 7 on the shaft of the screw conveyer. An arm 9 on the conveyer shaft contains a pawl 11 and is connected to a piston 13 which moves to the left, when compressed air is admitted to the chamber 29, and returns when this chamber is exhausted, due to the tension of a spring 10 and the pressure of the air on the end of the piston rod 12'. The piston rod is connected by a lost-motion device with a slide valve 15 working in a chamber 21 supplied with compressed air by a pipe 16. This valve controls the supply of compressed air, through a conduit 24, to the underside of a piston 23 actuating a slide valve 26 and also the exhaust from the underside of the piston through a conduit 30 and outlet pipe 17. In the position shown in Fig. 6, compressed air is supplied through conduits 22, 24 to both sides of the piston 23, which is thus balanced, the conduit 28 to the rear of the piston 13 being in communication with the compressed air chamber 21. When the piston 13 moves to the left, the valve 15 connects the conduits 24, 30 to exhaust and the piston 23 with valve 26 is depressed against the pressure of a spring 25. This movement connects the conduit 28 to exhaust and the .piston 13 together with the valve 15 moves to the right. In a modification, Fig. 9, a double-ended piston 13, 13<1a>, operates the ratchet. This piston is double-acting and is operated by a piston valve 23, 23<1>a. Pressure, is admitted to the chamber 21 through conduit 16 and, as shown, flows through the conduit 28 to the rear of the piston 13; the rear of the piston 13<1a> and piston valve 23<1a> being connected to exhaust through conduits 22<1a>, 28<1a>, valve 26 and conduit 17. Movement of the piston 13 to the left uncovers the conduit 22 and admits pressure to the piston 23 of the valve which moves to the left to cut off the pressure supply through the conduit 28 and connect the latter to the exhaust 17. The conduit 28<1a> is open to the pressure in the chamber 21 and the piston 13<1a> is then moved to the right.
