Abstract

328,480. O'Neill, J. H. May 28, 1929. Springs, arrangement of; guiding vertical play; equalizing load on wheels and springs.-In a pneumatic suspension-system for vehicles, a number of springs arranged between the sprung and unsprung parts of the vehicle are connected by pipes provided with valves so that the fluidpressure in any two or more springs may be equalized; also, each pneumatic spring may be combined with a helical suspension spring. In the vehicle shown in plan in Fig. 2 the pneumatic springs one for each wheel are connected by transverse and longitudinal pipes provided with valves which may be opened or closed as required to equalize the fluid pressure in any two or more of the springs. In the pneumatic-wheel suspension arrangement shown in Fig. 1, a wheelbearing member 2 is slidable vertically on tubular guides 3 secured at their upper and lower ends to yokes 4 pivoted by vertical axes on the frame of the vehicle. The weight of the vehicle is transmitted from the yokes 4 to plungers 6 which work in pneumatic cylinders 8 each provided with a flange 9 bearing on the upper ends of helical springs 10. The lower ends of the helical springs are supported on rings 11 secured by set-screws 12 to the wheel-bearing member 2. the set-screws passing through vertical slots in the tubes 3.
