Mattresses.-In mattresses comprising a frame, springs carried by transverse supports j, Figs. 1 and 12, and one or more longitudinal supplementary supports a, the supports a coact with intermediate points of the supports j and are vertically adljustable as a whole to prevent or take up sagging. The frame d may be of the same height as the springs, the supports j being secured to the lower edges of the frame, or the supports j may have cranked ends of the same height as the springs. The supports j may rest on the supports a as in Fig. 1 or may be adjustably suspended from, or pass through holes or slots in, the supports a. Noise deadening material or springs may be inserted between the supports a, j. Bolts b, Fig. 1, allow vertical adjustment of the supports a. The supports j may be strained wires and may be adjustably attached at their ends to the frame d by a hinged flap or by a horizontally-sliding angle-piece which may also be vertically adjustable. The supports a may themselves be supported by one or more adjustable transverse bars above or below them and joined to them at the crossing points. The supports j may be divided at the centre as in Fig. 12, two central supports a and two side supports a' being adjusted vertically to prevent the mattress sagging and horizontally by bolts b<1> to strain the supports j. A double mattress with the tension of the halves independently adjustable is thus obtained. In this modification, the side supports a<1> may be omitted, the ends of the supports j being secured to the frame d by bolts allowing vertical adjustment.
