Abstract

328,235. Holman, J. L., and Holman, A. T. Jan. 22, 1929. Percussive drills.-In a distributing valve for a rock drill &c. of the type wherein a piston 11 operates on a twist bar 12 within a cylinder 10, the valve gear is situated around the twist bar in front of the ratchet gear and consists of a sleeve 20 containing ports, a valve chest 14, and a reciprocating annular " hat-shaped " valve 16. The working fluid passes through ports 23 and 24 to the annular space 26 on the rear side of the brim of the valve, and ports 25 and 27 to the front side of the brim of the valve. In the position shown the space 26 is in communication with ports 28 and 30 to the front side of the piston. During the motion of the piston the port 37 is uncovered communicating the front side of the piston to atmosphere and at this point the greater force on the front side of the brim of the valve moves it and places the rear side of the piston in communication with the working fluid through ports 27, 29 and 31. The annular crown of the valve is hollow and the space 22 is in communication with the atmosphere. The annular space 32 is connected to the working fluid and arranged as a balancing influence.
