Abstract

327,828. Beattie, S., and Middelburg Steam Coal & Coke Co., Ltd. Nov. 30, 1928, [Convention date]. Loose tools and bits, retaining.-A. chuck for holding the drill in rotary, rotary-percussive, or percussive machines for cutting coal, rock, &c. comprises a body 2 and a jaw 4 hinged thereto which together form a socket 15 for the tool shank 16. The hinge is formed by a link 5 pivoted to both the body and the jaw by pins 6 so as to allow lateral movement of the jaw for centring the tool. The jaw is actuated to grip the tool by a bolt 8 pivoted in a recess in the body by a pin 9 and carrying a nut 12 and a conical washer 13 engaging a recess in the jaw, the latter being slotted at 10 to receive the bolt. The tool shank and socket 15 may be square as shown or of other polygonal cross-section, and a transverse pin 17 in the body engages a recess 19 in the shank to prevent axial withdrawal of the tool during operation. The pins 6, 9 and 17 are secured merely by friction and may be knocked out for replacement when worn. The body 2 has a central boss with a screwed aperture for attachment to the piston rod or rotary shaft of the machine.
