Abstract

Paper bags, making. - In completing the bottoms of paper bags by folding and pressing two oppositely disposed flaps on the bag bottom into position against the web of the bag, the bag is tensioned on the peripheries of two spaced rotating discs and one flap is folded by means operating parallel to the path of rotation of the peripheries of the discs and upon the inner face of the web and is pressed into place during contmued rotation, the same operations being repeated on the second flap. Bag tubes, with their bottoms partiallv folded as shown in Fig. 8, are fed by tapes l<1> engaging their side edges around a roller K<2>, Fig. 2, having a notch k adapted to co-operate with a creasing blade K to turn up the flap C<2> about the line C<4>, past a roller K<3> and creasing blade K<1> which turn up the final flap C<3> about the line C<5>, to two spaced discs M around each of which a tape l<1> passes, and the bags are held to the tapes by outer tapes l and are thereby stretched across between the discs. Between the discs two pairs of folding and pressing arms M', M<2> are mounted on hub members M<9> on the shaft M<6> of the discs. To each hub member M<9>, Fig. 3, a disc M<5> is adjustably secured and the disc carries, on an extension M<5a>, a lever M<3 >provided with the folding arm M<1>,< >or M<2>. A roller m<3> on the other arm of the lever controls its movement by riding along the surface of one or other of two fixed cams M<12>, M<13> secured to the framing machine. A pivoted arm M<4> on the disc M<5> carries a roller m' adapted to run in a groove on the face of one or other of the fixed cams to move the arm M<1> or M<2> concentrically with the shaft M<6>. In operation, as the lower left hand arm M<1>, Fig. 2, approaches the rear flap C<2>, the roller m<1> thrusts it forwards to turn down the flap and then the roller m<3> causes it to press the flap against the web of the bag. The adjacent arm M<2> then turns down the flap C<3>, the first arm M' is withdrawn, and finally the second arm M<2> presses the flap C<3> against the bag.
