Abstract

327,052. Scott, T. May 17, 1929. Planes and the like, arrangement, disposition, and construction of.-A wing structure or aerofoil for aircraft comprises, a plurality of wing sections or vanes disposed in spaced relationship one or more behind and one or more below another or others, so as to provide one, or more air passages through the wing structure or aerofoil from the front to the upper side thereof and to present one or more deflecting surfaces adapted to produce air currents above the wing sections or vanes and above the wing structune or aerofoil as a whole. The wing sections are arranged to provide at least one group, of which the wing sections or vanes are disposed one behind the other in such a manner that none of them is masked by a more forward section or vane. According to one form of the invention, the aerofoil comprises six wing sections 11 - - 16 arranged in three groups as shown in Fig. 1. Each of the wing sections 12, 13, 15 extends somewhat below the surface of the section immediately preceding it, the leading part of the upper surface of each sloping downwardly and forwardly to a pointed leading edge. The rear portion of each of the sections 11, 12, and 14 slopes upwardly over a part of the section following it; the passages enclosed between adjacent sections are narrower at the outlet than at the intake portions. The leading edges of the wing sections 11, 14 and 16 may be staggered rearwardly or forwardly of the structure as a whole. Alternatively, four wing sections may be arranged in two groups, a main group comprising three sections and a single section disposed be]ow the leading edge of the leading section of the upper group.
