Abstract

326,940. Morris, H. N. Feb. 2, 1929. Waterproofing; proofing-compositions; single coatings; compound sheet materials.-Waterabsorbent materials are rendered non-absorbent, acid-resisting and alkali-resisting by treating them with a common solution of rubber and one or more salts of cellulose in one or more of the volatile hydrogenated products of aromatic hydrocarbons or their hydroxy compounds or ketones or isomers or esters, with or without other volatile or non-volatile solvents or softening media, for example such solutions as are described in Specification 274,968, [Class 70, Indiarubber &c.]. The proportions of rubber and cellulose derivative may vary, but a proportion of 90 per cent cellulose and 10 per cent rubber is suitable for most materials. The material to be treated may be first dried and then painted or sprayed in one or more operations, or it may be impregnated with a hot solution in the case of articles of pressed paper, cardboard or other fibrous material, or wooden articles. The operation may take place at anv temperature below the boiling point of the solution, which may be varied as described in Specification 274,968, [Class 70, Indiarubber &c.]. Pressed paper tubes, wooden articles, paper for wrapping cables, small tiles, and other small articles are impregnated at a temperature a little above the boiling point of water. Wooden buildings or parts thereof may be sprayed or painted. The material may be first treated with a dilute mixture of the solution with a volatile diluent such as a hydrocarbon or hydrogenated hydrocarbon or mixture of hydrocarbons, hydrogenated hydrocarbons, butyl or other alcohol or ester, and acetone. After drying, a second treatment may be given. The first diluted solution may be mixed with a dry pigment, paint, or powdered mineral such as white or red lead, zinc oxide, or lithopone. In treating cement or concrete flooring, the solution may be emulsified with water. using bitumen, tar, creosote or oleic acid, and the emulsion used for mixing the concrete. In treating paper, cardboard or strawboard, the material may be treated on one side only by brushing or spraying or it may be passed through a tank of the solution and between rollers which may be heated. The solution may be mixed with china clay, fullers' earth or bitumen, and paper coated with the mixture, or two sheets pressed together with the mixture between, to make waterproof wrapping paper. Cloth or netting may be attached to the coated paper. Building materials, stone, bricks, tiles, slates, or asbestos cement tiles may be treated by immersion in or painting with the solution. Specifications 274,968, [Class 70, Indiarubber &c.], and 275,304, [Class 95, Paints &c.], are referred to.
