Caoutchouc, synthetic.-The polymerization of butadiene or its homologues, including phenyl butadiene, styrol, and the like, by means of an alkali metal, is carried out in presence of a small quantity of ammonia or of a free cyclic or saturated aliphatic primary, secondary or tertiary base. By this means the polymerization is slowed down, and undue rise of temperature during the reaction is avoided. The reaction mixture may, if desired, be heated and the reaction may be carried out under pressure. Examples are given of the polymerization of butadiene and isoprene by means of sodium in the presence of small quantities of ammonia and of aniline. Other substances, for example, ether, which fabourably influence the polymerization, or diluents such as ligroin, may be added in addition to the specified bases.
