Abstract
325,876. Muldal, S. Nov. 26, 1928. Driving-gear.-In means for converting reciprocatory into rotary motion of the kind wherein a piston rod or rods act through rotary or non rotary parallelogram or other linkages on rollers coacting with a stationary or rotary cam, means engaging a track parallel to the cam surface are provided for maintaining contact of the rollers. In one form, one joint of a parallelogram linkage 8, Fig. 8, is directly pivoted to a piston rod 3, the opposite joint is connected to an opposed piston through a crossbar 19 and tension rods 7 and rollers 10 carried on the pivots of the other joints engage the inner and outer walls 16, 16<1> of a cam track in a fly wheel mounted on a transverse shaft 15. In the arrangement shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the shaft 15 is coaxial with the cylinder 1, the overhanging fly wheel 14 being formed with an internal cam track 16 transverse to the plane of the parallelogram linkage 8. The rollers 10 are carried in brackets 9 embracing the cam edge and are maintained in engagement by pins 13 engaging an auxiliary cam track 17 in the face of the flywheel. Secondary rollers 11 on the brackets 9 ride between fixed guides 12 to prevent rotation of the linkwork 8. In Fig. 5, the cam tracks, 16 17, are fixed, the brackets 9 carrying the rollers 10, 11 being mounted in radial guideways in the flywheel 14 attached to the shaft 15 and being coupled to the links 8 to which thrusts are imparted through ball bearings 21 so that the links are free to rotate with the shaft. In Fig. 3, the cam rotates, being fixed to the shaft and the linkage is restrained by fixed guides, but the links 8, carried by the ends of crossbars 20, 19 coupled, one directly and the other through tension rods 7, to opposed pistons, transmit thrusts acting radially inwards to the brackets 9 and rollers 10. In Fig. 7, one pivotal joint of the linkage is coupled to a single acting piston 3 the opposite joint being fixed. and the overhanging flywheel 14 is of spherical formation with the cam profile 16 on its edge and thetrack 17 on its outer surface. The brackets 9 are of corresponding shape, constrained by fixed arcuate guides 12 on the frame 18.
