Fibrous plastic compositions; wood substitutes. -Masses are made by compressing, while heating, the solid residues obtained in the complete hydrolysis of the carbohydrate constituents of vegetable materials such as wood, peat, &c. with the aid of acids whereby a complete saccharification and removal of the polysaccharides occurs, with or without the addition of bitumens, tars, pitches, sulphur, or mixtures of these. Other binders, fillers, &c. may be added, such as drying oil, colouring materials, peat, brown coal, sawdust, wood meal, asbestos, sand, lime sludge, clay, gypsum, talc, magnesia and heavy spar. Strengthening devices of metal or wood may be embedded in the masses. The products may be employed as acid proofing, cementing and coating agents, roadmaking, insulating and roofing materials, wall coverings, moulded articles, &c. Examples of compositions are given.
