Abstract

164,620. Sutherland, D. M. June 7, 1920. Boards; pulp, adding special substances to.- In making pulp board or other pulp articles, the pulp, which may be wood pulp, paper pulp, or rag pulp, with any suitable bir.der such as sulphur, shellac, mineral pitch, asphaltum, gilsonite, elaterite, china wood oil, and resinous matters generally, with or without colouring-matter, are moulded or shaped and dried to leave about 5 per cent of moisture therein and in this condition compacted in the presence of heat, preferably between two plates in a hot press and at a temperature above 212‹ F., and cooled before the pressure is released. A coating of wax or oil prevents the board from sticking to the plates of a press, particularly when a fusible binder is employed. The board &c. to be compacted may be dried until about 5 per cent of moisture remains, or moisture may be added to a completely dried board or article. Buckets, rods, &c. may be produced by suitable moulds.
