Abstract
325,661. Davis, N. R., and Associated Electrical Industries, Ltd. Jan. 8, 1929. Induction furnaces.- The top part or mouth of the lining or crucible of a coreless induction furnace is sintered by inserting a metal ring 5 of heavy cross-section in the mouth of the crucible and inducing eddy currents therein by means of the furnace coil. The silica or magnesite with or without a binder is rammed between the metal pot 3 and ring 5 and the furnace coil 1 and casing 2. A lip or spout 6 is provided in the lining which is formed from ganister at this part. The furnace is charged and the coil energized but until the pot 3 fractures by fusion it shields the ring 5 electromagnetically. As the charge melts it exerts a shielding action on the ring. During the period between the fracture of the pot and the melting of the charge considerable heat is developed in the rings 5 and the adjacent lining is sintered. When the furnace is tipped to pour the melt part of the ring is melted and a gap b, Fig. 2, is formed therein. During the next melt intense heat is developed at the part c which melts and renders the ring discontinuous.
