Abstract
325,533. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Nov. 16, 1928. Hydrogen.-In preparing phosphoric acid and hydrogen by the action of water or steam on phosphorus at temperatures of about 650-700‹C., the reaction products contain some lower oxides of phosphorus which may be converted into phosphoric acid by cooling the reaction products to a slightly lower temperature (about 600‹C.) and maintaining them at this temperature for some time preferably in the presence of catalysts, such as alloys of copper and nickel, fireclay, carborundum carbon &c. A mixture of phosphorus and steam at a temperature of 300-320‹C. enters at A a reaction vessel C and passes over a catalyst 1 of copper-nickel alloy. The reaction products acquire a temperature, due to the reaction, of 650-700‹C, and are cooled in region B to about 600‹C. by injection of water, aqueous ammonia, or a solution of acids of phosphorus obtained in washing hydrogen prepared from phosphorus and steam as described in Specification 262,455. The cooled reaction products pass over a catalyst 11 consisting of fireclay. Specification 278,578 also is referred to.
