Ashpits. - In the disposal of furnace residues and other solid material, the inlet of the hopper receptacle is provided with crushing means cooled by exteriorly - applied water which is conducted away separately from the crushed material. The discharge opening of the hopper 2 is controlled by a door 5 with counterweight 6 and when open the residues are washed from the sloping floor 4 by water from a pipe 10, through a grid 8 into the sluiceway 7 which is flushed by a stream from nozzles 19. A casing 9 prevents passage of air or gas between the hopper and the atmosphere. Residues discharged from the furnace are crushed by breaker rolls 11 which are cooled by water from the pipes 12, the water being collected by nozzles 13 and directed into funnel shaped conduits 15 converging into discharge conduits 16 passing downwardly to the sluiceway. An end flap valve 18 maintains a column of liquid in the conduit 16 and prevents the passage of air or gas.
