325,404. Metcalfe, R. D., and Metcalfe, J. C. March 7, 1929. Ejectors for vacuum-brakes.-In a steam ejector for vacuum, brake apparatus for railway &c. vehicles in which in one position of an operating-handle a steam valve is opened to admit steam to the main ejector to restore the vacuum in the train pipe and an air valve is closed, while in the other position the steam valve is closed and the air valve is opened, means are provided in combination with the main steam control valve for regulating the area for the flow of steam so as to compensate for variations in steam pressure. The handle a, Fig. 2, through a spindle b controls the admission of steam to the large, ejector nozzle c to remove the brakes, and of air to the train pipe to apply them. The continuously-operating nozzle d is controlled by a valve e. A valve f controls the rate of flow of steam through the nozzle c in accordance with the pressure of steam being supplied to the ejector. A pointer g moving over a calibrated dial h indicates the valve position for any given boiler pressure. In a modification Fig. 3, the valve f is turned by a wheel i and a nozzle j is provided to both the inlet and outlet ends of which air gains access under the induction action of the steam issuing from the nozzle c. A steambrake, control fitting k is fitted to the ejector. In a modification, the valve f is arranged in a passage through which the steam passes from the main valve to the nozzle c.
