324,825. Dunlop Rubber Co., Ltd., and Hardeman, W. E. Feb. 13, 1929. Tread projections and surfaces.-A pneumatic tyre is formed with side buttresses which, adjacent the actual tread surface, extend laterally substantially as far as, or beyond, the side-walls of the tyre, the buttresses having flat sides facing the direction of travel of the tyre. Figs. 1 and 2 show typical constructions. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the tread comprises alternate long and short transverse ribs 5, 6, the latter being formed with integral buttresses 7 extending beyond the side-walls of the tyre. Fig. 2 shows a modification in which the buttresses 7 are formed alternately on opposite ends of adjacent tread ribs. In all cases the ribs are formed with grooves 2 and, as shown, the tread portions of the buttresses may also be formed with grooves 12. Certain of the centre-line tread blocks 1 may be more or less suppressed so as to form wide cavities at these places.
