Abstract

324,089. Dix, H. S. Oct. 15, 1928. - Rotary intaglio machines; printing- surfaces; inking-apparatus. - Visiting cards and the like are printed automatically by a rotary machine comprising a printing-cylinder 2 to which the curved intaglio plates are secured by the aid of a curved metal plate 1 bolted to the cylinder, the intaglio plates being secured by adhesive to the plate 1. The cards are fed automatically from a pile, are registered, and are advanced to the printing-rollers by gripping devices which grip the rear edges of the registered sheets. The plate is inked by a positively driven roller 6 contacting with a driven roller in a duct 4. The roller system is radially adjustable, and the rollers 6 are readily removable to permit of the insertion of rollers of different sizes, and the whole inking-apparatus is readily removable for cleaning purposes. The inked plate is cleaned by a scraper 7, wiped by a cloth fitted to a roller 8 driven in a direction opposite to roller 2, and polished by a similar roller 9 supplied with whiting from a box 10. The cards are fed from a pile supported on a platform 19, Figs. 2 and 4, which is raised by cords 22 on drums operated by ratchet mechanism and reduction gearing. The cards are guided by rods 18 on a platform 17 fixed to the machine frame, and the top card is separated and fed by means of suction devices 26 on an oscillatory arm 26 carried by a shaft 24, which is normally raised by a spring 33 and is depressed by a cam 28, Fig 2, to press the suction devices on to the pile. The separated sheet is deposited on a registering table 37, Fig. 4, and is registered by an adjustable reciprocating rear stop 38 against front stops 40. At the same time the card is side-registered by reciprocating pushers 38 operated by eccentrics. The front stops 40 consist of short bars fixed to a spring- loaded rod, and spaced to permit of the action of strippers 49, Fig. 10, on a skeleton cylinder 12. Fig. 1, which take the registered sheet and feed it to gripers 60, Fig. 11, on a reciprocating frame 56. The grippers 49 are closed by spring action and are opened by gears 50, 51, fitted with a projection 52 which engages an adjustable stud 54 which maintains the grippers open for nearly a half revolution of cylinder 12. The frame 56 is formed with slats 57 on which the card nests, and the grippers 60 engage the rear edge of the card and push it between the printing members. A fixed projection opens the grippers to release the card. Delivery apparatits. - The printed card is stripped from the printing-cylinder by means of oscillating suction tubes 14 which carry the card printed side outwards to the position shown in Fig. 1. When the card is released from the action of the vacuum device, a card delivery device 15 moves in an inclined path and allows the card to slide off on to a delivery board 16.
